Rihanna, Katy Perry, and the Structural Flaw in Facebook Graph Search

This article – British Airways sees booking spike after social media posts by celebs like Rihanna and Katy Perry – caused me to reflect on the nature of interest graphs and how influence and search results are impacted by social signals.

One of the strongest drivers of Internet/Web search always has been the ability to get to the long tail of content. From a social information graph perspective, the beauty of networks like Twitter & Pinterest has been to allow diffusion of information through weak-tie connections. Both the weak-tie connections and long tail searches allow for relatively hard-to-get information to become available and flow rapidly across a large graph or network at low cost.

One of the strongest assets for Facebook has been the ability to cement strong-tie connections. Even the basis of “friendship” is based on establishment of a mutual tie. This allows for rituals and tools that help build a stronger connection – but the very basis of the strong tie may impede “fringe” information to flow into the network. In addition, the notion of celebrities and influencers plays a significant role in interest based searches and information discovery. Even LinkedIn has introduced a weak-tie feature (so that you can follow celebs – and not just connect) that allows for interest graphs to develop as so much of trends and curation begins with influencers who may NOT be in your network. This ability to form weak-ties at large scale enables the sharing of disparate information rapidly and easily, and removes the handicap that your strong-tie network needs to have the right expertise in all the different fields that interest you.

So given that Facebook is building a “Graph Search”, one needs to analyze the structure of strong-tie graphs that Facebook typically has, and understand whether they are most efficient for sharing new (and especially fringe or long tail information) quickly or with contextual richness – especially since most network will not have the hierarchy of influencers present. Will this structural issue become a fundamental flaw in “Graph Search”? Perhaps…at the minimum Facebook will have to carefully think about features (liked LinkedIn did) to help balance the social graphs out so that influencers can play at scale – and thus allow for a richer information to mine for searches. Fan Pages were a start – but that concept needs to be developed further. However Facebook does have a tremendous asset with Facebook Connect/OAuth (Read more about how Pinterest & Tumblr and other sites benefit Facebook) – and perhaps mining the information from external apps is the mechanism of opening up the graph? What do you think?

How Long Does it Take to Build a Native Mobile App?

Based on the infogragraphic from Kinvey, it takes approximately 18 months to build a native mobile app. From the looks of it, the analysis seems to be for native apps that have strong data integration with backend services – so pure content apps or gaming apps could follow a different cycle. Once you have a framework in place, that can help shave a week or so, but this is a good approximation of e2e build cycle for a particular kind of native mobile app.

2013: The Happiest Countries of the World

As people look for jobs or career opportunities during their lives, it is easy to forget the larger macro-economic drama that is playing out. In fact, some of the macro-story really even begins based on which country you were born in or start your early career in. The Economist has assembled a study that measures which countries not only provide the best life satisfaction today, but also have the potential of providing maximum opportunity in the future.

A few remarkable things about the study -

1. The United States slips from #1 position in 1988 to #16 in 2012.

2. Smaller economies seem to do better than larger economies

3. Countries with higher public spending on health, education, retirement and other benefits (like parental leaves) seem to be doing better.

Having said that there are some issues with the methodology that I’ve. Out of the many factors, climate is one of the factors that is being considered. I’m not sure how in a diverse climate country like United States or Brazil or India one can average that out. This might again be favoring countries with little variation in climate. Gender equality is another factor – but the measure is how many women in the parliament – which might be a relevant measure, but seems an overly narrow measure (especially as some countries have a quota or reservation system for seats).

Further, while much of the study shows why the factors can lead to current higher life satisfaction, it is not clear how these factors are PREDICTIVE in nature. It will be good for study to cite what research shows that the conditions being measured are predictors of higher opportunity in the future.

Still, some of the measures do make sense, and this is yet another reminder to the United States that we can’t rest on the laurels of past successes – the American system is a great one – but one that does need continuous change and nurture to make sure that we do not let stasis or the weaknesses of other class based systems infect an order that has always been based on opportunity and meritocracy. Let not America slip to mediocrity!

Jan 1, 2013: Gun Violence & Pain Medicine Overdose: 2 Menacing Scourges That Need Fixing

Two articles that I came across today that highlight that American needs to do more to protect life. The Mother Jones article gives voice and images to the many victims of the 2012 shootings. Often with fast-paced media, these stories – some young and some old – get washed away. The stories make us think beyond the numbers and about the lives that were impacted.

The second article is important too – just as a reminder that there are other menacing issues that are not as dramatic as gun violence, but are still silently killing many Americans. One is not more or less important than the other – as a society I hope that we can make progress in solving both.

151 Victims of Mass Shootings in 2012: Here Are Their Stories

“…as the nation mourns the excruciating losses in Newtown and finally begins to confront an epidemic of mass shootings amid the worst year for them in modern US history it is equally important to bear witness to the victims. In addition to the victims of this year’s seven mass shootings, we’ve included the victims of similar but less lethal rampages in a Portland shopping mall, a Milwaukee spa, and a Cleveland high school. Mother Jones has only included photos of those injured and killed that were shared publicly by the families or survivors themselves, or for which we were granted specific permission.” See full article

Thousands Die Annually From Pain Med Overdose

“‘More than 16,000 people die from opioid overdoses every year. Now, Dr. Russell Portenoy, who campaigned for wider prescription of pain medications like Vicodin, Oxycontin and Percocet, is having second thoughts. WSJ’s Thomas Catan reports” See full article
